Most of us have the awareness of our "inner voice" and our "outer voice" and usually manage to get through the day without sounding like idiots, fools or dangerous freaks.

The RW, on the other hand, has no compunction about babbling merrily along in total "inner voice" mode.  What LaPierre was saying today is exactly what he and the rest of the RW lunatics say to each other both privately and in their media machine bubble.

they were such masters at speaking to the hearts and concerns of every-day voters. The times have changed, their approach hasn't. Nowadays, they just sound increasingly out-of-synch.

the NRA except for remembering the Charleston Heston 'cold-dead-hands' moment.

There are a lot of reasons for people to join the NRA and rhetoric is right at the top of the list.  There are insider words and phrases that allow people to feel connected and accepted.  What LaPierre said today would have been comforting and expected to those who are most connected to the NRA.

What you and I think about today's performance is irrelevant to LaPierre and the NRA management.  It was needed to rally the troops, fund raise and remind the gun nuts that the Sandy Hook tragedy might result in more restrictive regulations so...buy, buy, buy.

I was lumping the NRA with the political RW, generally. While there's certainly a lot of overlap in the two groups, they are hardly the same.

The republicans/RW crave some vision of "how it used to be" so it makes sense that they have not changed ideology, rhetoric or tactics.

I'm 60ish and a life long liberal and can confirm that the republican party and even the lunatic right wing fringe have actually not changed a thing.

It was, of course, much easier for the republican party to control the message when it was just major network coverage.  Cable sort of mixed thing ups for them but in 1996 Roger Ailes created FoxNoise just for the republican party.  At that point in time, the republican party became not much more than infotainment as created by FoxNoise.

This is also why at this point in time, the republican party cannot govern, create legislation or even discuss policy.

Board of Directors. You might want to reconsider that.

            •  I did read the names of the BOD (0+ / 0-)

              which, sadly, includes Tom Selleck.

              What should I reconsider?

his speech. Mostly deriding the NRA for being so out of touch and not realizing Mortal Kombat was sooooo ancient.

if a habitat is flooded, the improvement for target fishes increases by an infinite percentage...because a habitat suitability index that is even a tiny fraction of 1 is still infinitely higher than zero, which is the suitability of dry land to fishes.
