    But I question the criteria.  Nate Silver had a good analysis tracking who voted most liberally relative to House district PVI. Another approach would track legislation, weighted by interest group rating, relative to seniority.  As an argument that we should pay more attention to Merkley, it's a good one, but the most valuable Semator would largely force the issue.  Plus, it's totally Sheldon Whitehouse.

      I like Merkley as well. I really hated Gordon Smith. I correspond with both Wyden and Merkley on a regular basis. They both respond, albeit with form letters. I have been to his office in DC on one of his meet the people coffee meetings. he really talked about issues in addition to taking a very good photo with my wife.

      I guess I'm wondering why the rest of the country can't get their acts together and replace idiots like Gordon with intelligent well intentioned folks like Merkley.
