  •  "An Armed Society is a Polite Society" is a phrase (2+ / 0-)

quoted from a Science Fiction author, Robert Heinlein.
He also believed in duels and if you wished to be unarmed, you wore something to show you were untouchable; which made you a coward in the process.
    Just a piece of trivia.

The man who said that to me that day had no clue who Robert Heinlein even is, much less where that quote came from.

      •  I believe you. Remember, he was a Science Fiction (0+ / 0-)

author, but if you were in High School in the 60's or early 70's you probably read, "Stranger in a Strange Land".
        You grok?

    •  I think the phrase is backwards. (0+ / 0-)

"An armed society is a polite society" doesn't quite work in real life. Just look at all the "trouble spots" in the world.

IMHO, it is more correct that a polite society allows for an armed society. In a polite society, if a problem occurs, the inhabitants would apologize, discuss, agree to a solution, and only reach for their guns as a last resort, when all options have been exhausted.

      •  The way Heinlein meant it was, rude people were (0+ / 0-)

eventually shot, so you were left with polite people.
