  •  Seriously? (21+ / 0-)

You think the connotation of "peanut gallery" is "Peanuts! Whee?"

I don't believe you really think that, sorry. Way to walk it back, though! Keep on walking and maybe you'll negate your whole argument.

      Isn't debate fun?

If it's not fun for you, take a walk, dude. You're taking yourself too seriously.

Go help a homeless person. That's what I do.

This post is dedicated to myself, without whom, I'd be somebody else. Though I'd still be an asshole. My Music: [http://www.myspace.com/beetwasher]

So now your going to be outraged over the term "peanut gallery"?

You think this calls the diarist's thinking into question?

Seems a perfectly appropriate allusion to me. These are the cheapest seats in the house and we're all more than willing to heckle the performers.

the slightest bit of outrage in Seth's comment.

This is part of the problem -- the hyperbole.

His comment was fine, calm, rational.

We are all irrational, angry children who need to be put in our place, which is in the audience, specifically the cheap seats, or the ones for youngsters.

Damn it, I thought this crap would end with the election and we could get back to adult political conversation. Always the optimist, me...

So it's "fine" to imply that another poster is a liar so long as it's done in what you consider a "calm, rational" way?

I was actually giving Seth the benefit of a doubt. I assumed he'd just gotten carried away, not that he'd cast the slur with malice of forethought.

I could be wrong of course.

I am providing the diarist with constructive criticism of his dialectic techniques. Just as I am not "outraged" or "attacking" the president, or the government. I am, again, providing constructive criticism, as is my patriotic duty as a citizen.

I do not feel that calling those who perform their patriotic duty members of the "peanut gallery" to be an effective method of fostering constructive conversation.

I was simply offering constructive criticism of the use of the phrase.

And now, as I wish to remain in a good mood for the holidays, I shall be ignoring you henceforth.

            Merry Christmas!

              a constructive critique or where
they believe you should be directing
              your own constructive criticism.

Nothing more patriotic than that, right?

Thanks for all of your efforts.

However, I found this article to be less than constructive, due to the use of insults and childish terminology. Same with many of the comments in this thread. Phrases such as "Peanut gallery," "take a walk," "undies in a bunch," lead me to believe that certain folks are not arguing in good faith. Rather, I feel they are attempting to silence dissent. This is not in any way helpful.

We should all try to remain respectful of differing opinions, as that fosters a healthy discourse, rather than implying that our opponents are childish or overreacting. Telling someone they are childish or overreacting will never achieve anything except to promote discord.

It is the equivalent of the troll's chorus of, "You mad, bro?" The point is not to promote discussion, it is to make the other side angry, to get them to walk away from the table.

Sadly, there are many here who feel that is a perfectly valid method of "winning" a disagreement.

                •  How can all of the many "insults (0+ / 0-)

                  and childish terminologies"
                  directed at the POTUS
                  on a democratic blog
                  be considered as helpful,
                  or arguing in good faith?

Where is respect for differing opinions?

                  There have been countless
                  numbers of those, and much
worse of late here. The words
                  and phrases and expressions
casually tossed off leads me to
believe that certain folks are not
arguing in good faith. And have a
                  history, and an agenda.

When I see you personally hide rating
such statements from those you tend
to agree with, I will take your pleas
                  for a healthy discourse seriously.

                  I won't hide rate anyone.

Thanks for all of your efforts.

                  •  Your characterization is incomplete (0+ / 0-)

While I agree that there are some insults and childish terminologies directed at the POTUS here, there are also measured critiques of his policies. Those critiques are met with the same rancor as the direst insult.

I don't hide rate either, not my style.

      Howdy Doody.
      It referred to the
      live studio audience.
      Of children, and I believe
      some parents also.

Actually, the all mighty and knowing
wiki says it originally came from vaudeville.

      I suppose at the time
it was meant to be cute,
      charming, endearing. Folksy.

I guess it got culturally 'jacked'
by one of the early 'edge' comics,
like Bruce, or Berman, as a sly,
      but sarcastic response to hecklers.

As in "no comments from the peanut gallery, please'.

Not anything like the officially proscribed
      insults of 'firebagger' or 'obot'.
Hide or troll rating for simple
      opinion disagreement is forbidden.

Thanks for all of your efforts.
