    a month before the conventions, and it would have blurred the "Obama is bipartisan while Republicans are not" narrative that he'd worked on for the better part of four years.  By picking a large fight about intransigent Republicans, it would have made Obama look more partisan to the casual voters he was courting, rather than (writ large) us die-hards who were voting Obama anyway.

    Would have felt good to us, but late July was long past time to make that move for the upcoming election strategy.

    Now at the inauguration, I'm all for the President declaring we have a Constitutional Crisis on our hands - one whole political party with control of a branch of Congress being utterly unable to govern.  Were I in his shoes, and no deal happens next week, I would announce that I have no confidence in Boehner's ability to deliver the votes for ANY deal and the House Republicans therefore need to elect a new speaker.
