LaPierre has long been preaching paranoia about the government, encouraging gun-nuts to build up high powered arsenals in preparation for them to take on the role of "Red Dawn" style "freedom" fighters when the government comes a knocking at their door, the most recent iteration of their conspiracy theory apparently being that Obama will put the UN in charge during his 2nd term and presumably start putting NRA members into FEMA concentration camps.

In response to the fact that military style armaments are now commonplace amongst the seriously unhinged fringe, law enforcement has increasingly militarized itself over the past two decades. In essence, LaPierre has been pushing us towards the very police state that he's been whipping up the nuts to fear.

The icing on the cake is that LaPierre now seems to want the "jack-booted thugs" to guard our schools. It kind of make you wonder if he might become a target himself of the most paranoid of his followers, who might see this encouragement of armed intervention from the government as a betrayal.
