    To clarify, you would have gotten the same health care in the US if you had a nice insurance policy. Which many do. Unfortunately many do not, and if this happened to them they would indeed be bankrupt. . .I have some concern that even with the mandated insurances being offered in the exchanges, the co-payments for catastrophic illness, unless capped would indeed lead to bankruptcy, or what I think is even more insidious, the imposition of a crushing debt burden on a family least able to afford it.
    Now you, and everyone reading this, understand why the most common cause of bankruptcy is catastrophic health problems.
       It is really the nut of the problem, if you think about it. It is actually easy to offer condoloences and hugs to someone who has lost a loved one. As I do myself, here. It is much harder when you are doing OK - i.e. healthy with good insurance which actually describes a majority of the population - to empathize with those who are not so fortunate, and say hmm, maybe I can sacrifice a little to help those who have lost a lot.
