    Here's a little story.

It's February, 2004. I'm collecting signatures for Howard Dean's presidential campaign. For some unknowable reason, they've sent me to work the sidewalk in one of the few Republican-dominated areas of NYC, the Upper East Side. Also very wealthy, even by New York standards. And it's effing freezing out. The question you approach with is, "excuse me, sir/ma'am, are you a registered Democrat?" because only they can sign nominating petitions.

I've done this before, and I'm pretty good at spotting Democrats. But in this area, everyone who looks likely turns out not to be a citizen, they are Europeans. I ask everybody, but most people walk past as though i were invisible. I'm having a spectacularly unsuccessful evening, and I can no longer feel my toes. But I know how to do this, so I keep smiling and asking.

Finally one guy, and as he blew past me, shouts back, " No, I work for a living!". I've done a lot of different kinds of work in my life, blue collar, white collar, pink collar, and I know this guy doesn't know the meaning of a hard days work, if he ever did.  I lost it. I just started yelling down the street at his back.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."........ "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." (yeah, same guy.)
