I would urge anyone who is concerned about Hagel's views on gay rights to take a look at Steve Clemons' article Friday in The Atlantic:

The Chuck Hagel I Know: A Staunch Defender of Gay Rights

LGBT rights aren't the thrust of what the DOD does, and regarding DADT, he's already said he would continue policy and has recanted his views. More importantly, on the issues that matter, i.e. the middle east, afghanistan, the budget, and iran...he is, dare i say it, a great choice. We all know LGBT policy will be directed from the WH, lets not kid ourselves.

On all these matters -- including LGBT rights.  The SecDef is an influential position and we don't need someone in that role at odds with WH/Democratic views.

Hagel's views are NOT at odds with WH/Democratic views on LGBT rights, which is the point of the article I cited.

I fully support Hagel's nomination, if Obama chooses him.  Hagel is a decorated Viet Nam veteran who served as an enlisted man (Sgt E5).  This gives him a tremendous, first-hand understanding of the needs of the rank and file serving in the military.
