"Covenant Marriages?"  I think a few states actually have laws for it. I think they disallow "no-fault" divorce if you have a "covenant marriage."  Or maybe they are just trying to get it put into law. Huckabee or one of those types?

we have marriage period, and now have it for same sex couples as well at least in the Episcopal Church in the United States (and some other places as well). I have no idea what a "covenant marriage" is, but I suspect it re-defines marriage in a radical way. ;)

By the way, unlike many Evangelical churches, if you're divorced and want to be re-married in the Episcopal Church, you have to get permission from your Bishop. Because unlike homosexuality, Jesus DID have something to say about divorce: NO.

Get your goddamned guns out of my church. This means you.

The number of divorced and remarried fundies. I mean, Jesus was quite clear on that one.

Now I'm married to a previously married man, so I'm not complaining we've gone lax on that one.

But really, if we're going to complain about ignoring direct Christ-given advice on marriage ...

    •  You're correct (7+ / 0-)

Some states have the option of "covenant marriage," which allows divorce only on specific grounds (such as adultery, abuse, or abandonment) and requires a waiting period with counseling before divorce (I think there's an exception for abuse).  Of course, even after agreeing to this someone can always go to Nevada and get a quickie no-fault divorce.

And Huckabee and his wife redid their vows in a covenant marriage when it started in Arkansas (which also gave them a wedding gift exception to the rules on elected officials accepting gifts, IIRC).

but fortunately it failed. What it does is force people to stay in the marriage for at least a year, and undergo counseling to try and repair the marriage.
Since covenant marriage is a term made up from the Bible, you can imagine (and you'd be right), that the woman will take most of the blame (if he cheated, it's because you weren't a good wife, blah blah blah), and it's a trap for women or men who are victims of abuse.
Republicans and RWCNJs like to talk about marriage, but none of them want to get rid of divorce (even  some covenant marriages end in divorce).
