    Detroit rented billboards that were updated with that city's murder toll. They were based on the General Tire billboards that recorded "cars built to date," except of course these featured a handgun and in the smoke from the barrel was a "odometer" that told how many had died victims of crime.

    It was during that same summer that Isiah Thomas, the guard for the Detroit Pistons, joined with Mayor Coleman Young in calling for a "No Crime Day" in which folks were asked to refrain from criminal behavior.

    Only ten folks were killed that Saturday.
