    I couldn't go that deep into it with the children because that layer would have been too complex for them.

    However I have to waffle a bit. Part of the reason Napoleon invaded Russia was not just because the European monarchs tried to squash the revolution to maintain their power (Catherine the Great for instance, was pro-enlightenment before she was against it), but also because he did want to expand his empire and make his way  to India to take it from the English.  

    And in this case, intentions turned to murder and then mass privation and death.  In trying to rid Europe of the oh-so-evil Russian monarch, the French raped and killed Polish peasants, stole their food, and devolved into thugs once their supply lines were down.
