to learn that working a night shift always entailed wearing a ballistic vest as a Paramedic. In the late 90's, each ambulance was equipped with 2 ballistic vests, as the cost of supplying your own vest kept going up, and the Crack Wars had not yet ended.

I became a Paramedic to help people--not to dodge bullets & disarm knife-weilding nutcases. I know few Paramedics who worked in an urban setting who were not assaulted at some point. Drunks were the worst. They would swing wildly for no apparent reason. Luckily--they were too wasted to inflict much damage...usually. I did get a black eye/scratched cornea from a confused, blind, 80some y/o woman, who lashed out at me while I took her BP. Lucky shot. Um, unlucky shot? She just flung her arm and POW! eye hurt.  Good times!

Monthly HIV testing for years, then quarterly for 3 years upon leaving active duty.

So far... so good. (many years later).

Being struck as I left the bus (Ambulance) by the guy who was reading the (folded) NY Times and driving to work.
That's the one where I really got angry.  He motored past the cop, over the road flare barrier, and hit me just prior to hitting the vehicle accident we were summoned to.

HE was aggravated by MY denting his hood and cracking his windshield with the trauma kit.
His attorney contacted the Department days before the window for official grievances closed on that incident.  $10,000 in compensatory damages; in lieu of a lawsuit for vehicle damage, loss of work, emotional distress, and impugning his character.

The municipality settled for $6800 rather than face civil action, claiming deposition costs alone would be greater than the $10,000 originally sought.  The attorney, who made a business out of this, pocketed $2300 including expenses and said:  "See you again!"
We would, as he learned to game the system.
