    in this case.  And the case is unusual on its face.  About arson controls, I don't know.  It sounds like Spengler used a flare gun and gasoline.  There are few restrictions on the possession of flare guns, unless they're altered in some way.  And the ways are endless to start a fire.

    Perhaps Spengler was less motivated by injuring firefighters than he was motivated by preventing anyone from putting out the fire.  Total speculation.

    You're right about having discussions on these things including mental health reform and the criminal justice system.  Honestly, I don't even know where to start.

        on so many levels.  I don't know if he ever sought help -- many don't.  I don't know if he even could have been helped -- many can't.  But given his history, he seems to have fallen through many cracks in the system.  We really need to look at those cracks.
