  •  We certain aren't living in a world without racism (9+ / 0-)

but the man you describe sounds like he could be mentally ill and in need of treatment.  And in any event, despite the provocation I'm not in favor of someone being the first to resort to violence.

    •  To the rescue, here comes mental illness. (13+ / 0-)

White man misbehaves? Blame it on something called "mental illness."
Black man misbehaves? He is a thug!
Muslim misbehaves? He is a terrorist!
I dunno, I hate violence but I cannot even begin to pretend to shed crocodile tears for what happened to that poor, mentally ill provocateur. Must be because I have been watching Roots for the whole weekend.

      •  Well... (4+ / 0-)

Mental illness can affect the whole spectrum of humanity, it's not limited to one race.  If someone is for example schizophrenic, their disease can alter their perception of reality and what is going on around them.  If one of the ways that manifests itself is shouting racist garbage in a mall - and it's a product of their illness - then I would feel sympathy for them.  This man may have in fact been a sane racist, but most examples of conduct I've seen that are clearly racist are not so blatant as shouting at strangers in a mall (i.e., more like statements in "polite conversation" that begin "I'm not a racist but. . .")

And as for violence, it tends to escalate.  If this man is mentally ill and not thinking clearly, after getting hit he may think the rational thing to do is get a gun and start shooting.  Lord knows guns are easy to come by, and plenty of other mentally ill people have done it - this year - in shopping malls, movie theaters, elementary schools and today in an ambush for firefighters.  There's rarely a true need to throw the first punch.

mentally ill. Or is that not allowed?

I made my comment because the diarist's description of the first man had indicators that seemed (to me at least - but I'm not a mental health professional) to possibly indicate mental illnes.  Example:

his face had that rough, living-on-the-street, or off-his-meds, sort of look, and his eyes were animal-like and irate. He was frothing, spitting his invectives  . .
The black man wasn't described in a way that gave an impression of mental illness.  If he was mentally ill, I would feel the same way about him as the other man, although in situations involving the mentally ill, you would normally deal with violent versus non-violent people differently.
            •  I was thinking mental illness, too. (1+ / 0-)

There are plenty of racists who harbor the same kinds of thoughts as the racist in this diary. But the sane ones don't go shouting those thoughts to strangers in malls.

If you're alone and shouting anything at strangers in a mall--unless there's really and truly a fire or shooter attack etc.--you're probably mentally ill.

          •  Crazy white guy (0+ / 0-)

wasn't breaking the law. The dude who hit him was. He could have gone down for aggravated battery and serious prison time.
The best move for everybody would have been to stay away from the crazy guy and report him to mall security.

        •  Remember that brilliant mathematician John Nash (0+ / 0-)

developed schizophrenia and one way that his illness was manifested is that he became very anti-semitic. The white guy's description certainly sounds like mental illness.

      •  I'm black... (2+ / 0-)

        don't see your point here...

obvious this man was no thug, got his ass kicked and went for some more...  no terrorist, he did not use any weapon but his mouth...

talked his way up on a beat down... mentally ill in this case anyway...

    •  thank God he did not pull out his .223 (3+ / 0-)
