John Henry Pepper is also credited with the invention of the theatrical special effect called "Pepper's ghost". This employs a sheet of glass set up at 45 degrees to the viewer. The scene beyond the glass is the main one and is well lit. The "ghost" is in a darkened area to the side which is not normally seen until figures in it are brightly lit and reflected by the glass. Viewed from the front they seem to appear and disappear magically.

The effect is still used everywhere from museums to theme parks. It is also the principle behind "two way" mirrors.

We will work, we will play, we will laugh, we will live. We will not waste one moment, nor sacrifice one bit of our freedom, because of fear.
