    But remember, we are talking about the South in 1858. Very few women would have played an active role in a violent action such as this film depicts. To me, that's a question we use best to assess films as a whole, at any given time, i.e., how are movies today depicting women's agency? I don't think it's as useful to ask each individual movie to do that. There are certainly movies that lack a role for men with any real agency, and that may just be right for that story. But we can measure progress over time by assessing movies collectively from one point in time to another. Just my two cents.
