      and most firearms are not.  Even if the information is private, it is registered so that if any damage is inflicted by them the police know exactly who's car it is at a few clicks on a computer.  I guess the question is the right to privacy for those that keep (and unfortunately many times don't keep because they end up in the wrong hands) firearms.

      Do they have the same right to privacy as any citizen that has done nothing wrong, or do they have the same rights as a sex offender that (even after serving time for his crime) still has to register as a sex offender?  I am not comparing gun owners to sex offenders, but the logic of the sex offender registries is that they can help avoid more sex crimes and that in the interest of society their locations are made public.  It is certainly in the interest of society to protect people (especially children) from gun violence and if over 30,000 firearm deaths every single year (and rising) are not enough to consider that the right to privacy of the firearm owners then I don't know what is.

      Then they came for me - and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.
