    many, many years.  All of it was interesting but the account of the destruction of Darmstadt was horrifying.  It was a fact that  the men who flew those raids were generally between 18-23 and had a depressingly short lifespan.

      but 'Butcher' Harris. His tactics were inflexible, and he was wrong in thinking that he could win the war by 'area bombing' ALONE.

      The correct tactic would have been night precision bombing to dovetail with the USAAF daylight attacks. This was only perfected in late 1944/early 1945 by No 5 Group under Cochrane (using No 627 Squadron Mosquitos to mark targets the size of a football field - at night)

      There was a lot NOT to like about Harris; the head of the Air Staff (Portal) had a chance to fire him - and didn't, which is a crying shame.
