  •  My one quibble with this post Jed is this line: (17+ / 0-)
if the goal is to get Republicans to compromise, then they need to pay a price for refusing to do so.
What price will the Republicans pay?  They won't get blamed.  The media will continue to say that both sides failed to come to an agreement.

The price--whatever consequences result--will be paid by the rest of us, as usual.

The media will be stenographers.  The Republicans will do what they do, crying and pointing, and making the assignment of blame as hard as they can.  The key here is the behavior of Democrats.  If our leadership can't speak with a fairly consistent voice, and if they can't make clear and concise statements about Republican tactics and the damage Republicans have imposed on the middle class and working class in order to protect their rich donors, then the media won't make that case for them.  Of course, the message is muddled by Democratic 3rd way framing and some key Democrats all to eager to serve those same rich donors - Hoyer springs immediately to mind.  It helps to keep the end game in focus while the process grinds on, if only to have clarity when the inevitable hostage taking takes place.
