  •  I am sure many of their staff (12+ / 0-)

are empathetic, decent, caring individuals.  Most medical professionals are, probably a little more than the general public.  Their care and empathy, however, are also resources that can be exploited.  There's no particular reason why a corporation can offer decent care with kind and dedicated staff, and at the same time have a marketing department and business strategy that squeezes as much money as possible out of very vulnerable people and sells dreams along with care.  I don't know their business model well enough, but there are certainly empathetic, kind, dedicated staff with the National Health Trusts in the UK paid by British taxpayers, as well as empathetic, dedicated, kind staff at Cancer Treatment Centers of America, in the employ of shareholders in that company.  The difference is the inefficiency of our system, with multiple administrative systems, lack of any sort of cost benefit analysis for interventions, and of course the profit diverted from the healthcare system into the pockets of shareholders and management.
