...while I think the conduct of the officers was criminal and deserving of severe punishment, I also am neither judge nor juror, and I dislike petitions as a means of getting a judicial result. It smacks of justice by mob and flies in the face of the essential truth that public opinion ought not to be a factor in who is or is not prosecuted. The officers should be prosecuted because they committed a crime, not because any person or persons did or did not think they ought to be -- the judiciary is one part of the government that really can't and shouldn't run along democratic lines.

When dealing with a recalcitrant police department it is often useful to apply public pressure to their boss, in this case the Governor. He is not a police officer, is not bound by any "blue code" of solidarity, and is concerned about his public image -- I think he, rather than the DA, might be the more useful, and appropriate, target of public pressure. Enough public outcry and he will lean on the State Chief of Police, and then hey presto! the investigation will come up with a recommendation to can the two cops after all. In the absence of that sort of pressure from the top, it is very rare to see one police officer sanction another police officer, no matter what horrible shit the latter may have pulled.
