For ‘true’ and ‘false’ are attributes of speech, not of things. And where speech is not, there is neither ‘truth’ nor ‘falsehood’: ‘error’ there may be, as when we expect that which shall not be, or suspect what has not been; but in neither case can a man be charged with untruth. Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan chapter 4
There are some objects which can create a moral circumstance that is evil by nature, I believe. Even within the most strictly Christian point of view, there are some objects, and they are excessively few, that can rise to the point of "evil," but only because of the social, economic, and psychological forces of man embedded in their making (e.g. the hydrogen bomb, the UAV with missiles).

People complain about dirt, but I'd like to see them make some.

If the existence of the hydrogen bomb effectively prevented the US and USSR from blasting most macro life forms on the planet into oblivion, is it evil in and of itself?

If armed UAVs reduce the so-called "collateral damage" of so-called war by, say, 95%, are they evil in and of themselves?

This kind of hair-splitting and the debates it may engender are yet more reasons God made beer....  ;)

We cannot call ourselves a civilised society if we refuse to protect the weakest among us.

      •  Inherent due to manifest power (0+ / 0-)

The reason I say these two devices rise to the position of evil is that they encode a vast, vast power differential. In fact, they impose/create a situation of complete invulnerability and complete annihilation. The H-bomb is something which can be used with no danger to user and no defense or hope or help for the victim. The drone with a missile exposes its users to zero danger and provides no possible defense.

Only because of the incomparable power differential is there a good/evil embedded in these weapons. Niebuhr spoke of the bomb as a fundamental evil, and I would add the drone, because of the fallen nature of man.

If there were an Edenic person, those devices would not be evil, either, but sinners cannot create such things without having evil.

As for beer, I'll give you another quote.
