Yes, you listen to the other guy's offer before coming back with your own.

    •  Not when the country doesn't agree with him. (16+ / 0-)

Remember our favorite slogan from the Tea Party? "Keep Your Government Hands Off My Medicare!!"

You think the polls are lying and Americans - including Republicans - somehow feel different about Social Security?

If the President didn't want to touch SS benefits, he could very easily shame the Republican Party for proposing such a stealthy cut. A few web ads would give enough of a preview of how awful 2014 would be for anyone voting for the Chained CPI.

Listening isn't the same thing as agreeing.  How are you going to know what to counter, and what to respond to, if you don't listen to what the other side is saying?  The rest of the country is hearing what he's saying, so you have to base your response on it.

And "if" the President didn't want chained CPI, there are many different ways to play this other than the one you've come up with.  Making him an offer he can't accept, for instance.

he shouldn't be talking like he's for it, and he should make sure the rest of the Dems know it's off the table permanently. Even if it takes using a cluebat on them. Mr O is a nice guy, but he's a crap negotiator, and it makes him a lot less effective as President than he should be. (FYI: my cluebats are closed-cell pipe insulation. Might hurt a piece of paper, but not a head.)

(Is it time for the pitchforks and torches yet?)

beltway strategy. Not many voters are gonna believe our Party didn't really mean it when they, too, put SS cuts on the table.
