    You now have many states, mostly with relative small populations, that are not likely to elect Dem. Senators for a very long time.  That is offset somewhat but far from completely by the small states of New England, which have become a deeper and deeper blue lately.  But, generally, the dominance of rural America and the South by the R.'s and/or the conservatism of Blue Dog (I.e., pseudo-) Democrats means that the Senate, like the House, is more conservative than the country as a whole and that there is little chance of improving that situation in the near future.
