    Yeah, they put that statement out there and President Obama is back in DC. But look at the larger role he actually plays - more of a post-partisan referee than an advocate for the middle class.

    So he'll gladly come back to do a Grand Bargain that has stuff like the two trial balloons he floated; raising the Medicare eligibility age and cutting the inflation indexing for Social Security.

    The larger question is who is the advocate for holding the line and maintaining every penny of these Earned Benefits for the middle class, regardless of the budget situation? Not the Republicans. Not Referee Obama. Not some of the rank & file Democrats either I'm afraid. There is a Progressive caucus out there, but you wouldn't know it from the mainstream media.

    The Republicans take their final refuge in loyalty to their "principled" positions. In that climate, the Democrats' message really ought to go farther than "we are not insane".
