since then I have done a lot of extra consulting

    took a buyout

now have a pension, social security and a job, coming close to doubling my buying power

things change in more than year, every much so

in 2011 we had close to maxed out our credit cards for a variety of reasons -  among other things we had to help family members in far worse position than we were.

since then we have refinanced our house 3 times, cutting our mortgage payment by >20% while also getting cash out to pay off other bills.

I did not lie to the community in 2011.  Without the scholarship I could not have afforded to go.

In 2010 it was marginal, I did not apply for a scholarship, and people privately offered to pay my way, but I scraped together the money.

As my financial condition has improved, so have my giving to others, which far exceeds what I discuss here.

Even when times were tight we continued to give to non-profits beyond our individual religious bodies.  That's how we are.

There have been members of Congress who have been homeless or on welfare at other points in their lives.

I have never asked for this community to pay my bills.  I asked once, in the 9+ years I have been a member of this community, for support for a DFA scholarship.

When I have had money I have donated to Yearlykos and Netroots nation to help others go.

I participated as a donor as well as a blogger on the reservation fuel drive -  I don't remember being criticized for my donation there.

When someone unsolicited gave me a lifetime subscription to DailyKos, I paid it forward by buying one for someone else.

The fact that I have gone back to work fulltime while drawing both a pension and social security has given me some financial flexibility.

I am very active politically in Virginia, and the Virginia Ball is being sponsored by my local democratic party.  It would be very appropriate for me to attend.  I could financially justify it.

I decided in lieu of doing so to donate the money I would have spent to important causes.

I could have done so without commenting, but I wanted to focus on these organizations because the work they do represents part of why I am politically active.

I am not justifying, merely explaining because I think you have a mistaken impression of me.

You may choose to maintain your impression.

I feel for you, and if you are really hurting you can ask for the help of this community, including messaging some of us directly to ask for help.  We are a generous community.
