  •  Actually and unfortunately, I know people who (6+ / 0-)

aren't the slightest bit humbled by the fact that they have killed someone. I have heard exactly that type of tough talk and brashness from people I know have killed. I have watched people take pictures alongside the people they killed as though they were alongside an elk or large fish.

So, it is impossible to tell a person is being honest by how they tell the story. I wish, even in cases where killing may have been justified to save a life, that people were more humbled by the experience. Alas, that is not the way it is.

That being said, it is far better to just assume a story like this is true until proven false.

    •  You and I both know, ranger, (6+ / 0-)

the walls folks build around their most deeply felt personal experiences. From my experience, especially when someone is recounting strongly felt emotional events they display what the shrinks like to call a "flat affect", it seems like what they're relating doesn't mean a thing to them.
      Yet we know different.

      •  I compartmentalize. (5+ / 0-)

But to not have PTSD about it, at some point things have to become a story to tell - you cannot relive it every time you think about it, if that makes sense.

I also think its important for women to share their stories, because rape is so under-reported.

        •  It makes absolute sense. (5+ / 0-)

I've got a whole lot of PTSD, service-connected disabled for it. There's a lot of things I can decribe as if I were reading the phone book.

Actually reliving them, not so much.

For that reason I don't put a lot of store in evaluating someone's veracity from their emotional tone. I've also met some fine emoting fabulists.
