Does this kind of thing every help anyone argue?

And the Left can be every bit as knee-jerking judgmental and reactionary as the Right.  Trust me on this. My problem is I am a free thinker, which means I make up my own mind based on evidence - not either side's cherry picked data.
Unlike we silly extremists, you alone of humanity are able to suss out reality and pick and choose the real facts, the ones that aren't "cherry" picked.  You who straddle the happy medium, the middle of that medium, in fact.

I've heard such from everyone who makes contrarianism into a useful end in itself.  Every faux centrist who wants to raise the retirement age for SS also says such things.  We all think we're right, it isn't helpful to add "I'm right because I'm so smart and you all are just sheep who bleat what the herd bleats."

In fact, the left is not "every bit" as judgmental and reactionary as the right.  This has in fact been studied extensively and it turns out the left and right are not symmetric, and while we're not immune to these human failings, we are statistically less prone to these things than the right.  No doubt I am "cherry picking" because I post empirical research that disproves your claims.

If that's not an oxymoronic thing to say in this context... ;-)

Let us all have the strength to see the humanity in our enemies, and the courage to let them see the humanity in ourselves.

I think its a valuable and true statement.

On this thread alone, 2 different people have said I have lied about my very personal experiences of rape, one has called me a right wing troll and a liar.

If you advocate home protection weapons, people go apeshit on you.

      •  When you write what Scientician quoted (8+ / 0-)

you're not defending, illuminating, or justifying your personal experiences. Quite the opposite: the implication of that statement is that you're claiming to be a better distiller of objective information than the rest of us.

That's a very bold claim. It's a claim that's likely to annoy people who read it. In fact, it's likely to be wrong for many of us. (To flip one of your arguments around, you know close to nothing about pretty much all of us.) And it's likely to make a lot of people less inclined to believe anything else you say.

I'm not writing this to attack you; I'm writing this to explain why it was a bad idea to write that particular statement.

        •  In retrospect? (4+ / 0-)

It came from a place of pain.

I mean, I garner r/w trolls because of my FB page and radio show and my far-left opinions.  They HATE me. I'm used to that.

But I guess I never expected the left to be so vicious with me because I own guns...

I AM for regulation.  But this thread alobe illuminates just how very cruel people can be when you don't group-think.

The Left as a whole generally is for a gun-less society, and breaching that code opens you up to abuse.

So, yeah, not my best sentence ever... but I still "feel" it.
