    yes.

    •  Milk's debatable (0+ / 0-)

Skim milk I can see. But even 2% is basically fat floating in sugar water. And whole milk? You really don't want to be drinking that. There are lots of better ways to get nutrition than most milk drunk in this country. And don't get me started on the greenhouse gas effects from all the methane produced by those cows. If we halved America's dairy production it would be a good thing.

What's wrong with America? I'll tell you. Everything Romney said was pre-chewed wads of cud from Republicans from the last 30 years and yet he managed thru a combination of racism and selling the (false) hope of riches to get 47% of the national vote.

may not be the best thing in the world for people to get nutrition, it's better than drinking soda.  Whole milk isn't more than 4%.

Just curious.... what would you replace butter with??  What about sauces made from milk??  Buttermilk pancakes??  Personally, I refuse to bake any breads/cookies/cakes/etc with anything but 'real' butter.  Margerines don't cut the mustard in baking.

        •  Oh, I agree we need to keep some dairy (1+ / 0-)

And I'm a butter purist. Try bringing margarine into my house and you'll test my pacificism. But I think we need a lot less of it. Much of the dairy industry is propped up by the farm bill and it doesn't help us or the world that it is.

cereal with water. (We drink 1% here.)

Can't do soy because of thyroid issues.

And almond and other "milks" are meh.

And you'll take away my hot chocolate when you pry it from my frozen fingers (though I can skip the whipped cream at least).

Other dairy products we enjoy: cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream (naturally), good hard cheeses like cheddar or jack (sliced American for me is a guilty pleasure). Nothing like cream of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich on a cold, damp day.

          •  I'm right there with ya!!! I don't drink a whole (0+ / 0-)

lot of milk - .5-1 gallon a week and it's now skim.  Don't have cereal a whole lot....  but, butter, ice cream, cheeses, sour cream in potatoes, creamed sauces.

But, I do agree that many of the subsidies that are handed out shouldn't be.  Sugar, nope, less on corn, etc.  I'd be fine with subsidies on products that aren't processed (potatoes yes, potato chips no - even though potato chips come from potatoes).  Yes, it does get into 'big brother' territory of trying to dictate a 'proper' diet for people.  But, there is precidence (sp) for this.  In the state of Iowa, the vast majority of food is not taxed.  But, certain types are - candy in particular, food prepared in resturants also.
