  •  The Senate can eliminate the filibuster (0+ / 0-)

at the beginning of the next Congress.  It doesn't make sense that an earlier session's Senate can make rules that a subsequent Senate can't change by majority vote.  They can make a rule requiring supermajorities for whatever, but only for that session.  Or so I would think.

But it would be nice if there were 60 votes to change the rule.  It would look cleaner.

We're all pretty strange one way or another; some of us just hide it better. "Normal" is a dryer setting.

    •  McConnell will not let his Republicans vote for... (1+ / 0-)

... filibuster reform of any kind, at least not without extracting - and extracting is the right word - a lot from the Democrats in return.

This time, unlike last session, Harry Reid can not let himself be flummoxed and hoodwinked on this ... by the Republicans or his fellow Democrats.

Stand up and threaten McConnell with all sorts of non-old-boy-comity in the US Senate if he insists on 60 votes ... and then go with 51 and change the damn obstructionist filibuster rules. Senator Reid, you need not allow McConnell to frame and set the dialog on this any more.
      1. A stand-up-and-deliver requirement so-the-public-can-see-who's-obstructing-and-why is absolutely not unreasonable. It's simply a reversion to past practice of only a few years ago.

      2. Limiting the kinds of procedural motions to which a filibuster can be made simply clears the way for less obstruction. It does not gut the treasured notion of a filibuster.

Which, by the way, has no precedent in meetings of other kinds, meetings where things must be decided, where business must be done. It is an anomaly in democracy and it has been patently abused by the GOP in the last Congress.

It is time to change it.

2014 IS COMING. Build up the Senate. Win back the House : 17 seats. Plus!
