    'spirit door' flaws were placed in art so that the soul of the artist didn't get trapped by the perfection of a design. I'm not sure how widespread the practice was or which cultures subscribed to it.

    I do know that there are images that I can be drawn into and look at for hours. I can see where creating something powerful could be distracting and draw the ego into contemplation or congratulation of having created 'perfection'.
