  •  My main beef with Hagel (23+ / 0-)

is that he's a Republican.  It is tiresome seeing Democratic presidents doubt that their own party is up to snuff on defense and appoint Republicans.  Ever since the the DoD was created in 1947, there have been only four Democratic SecDefs: Harold Brown (1977-81, Carter), Les Aspin (1993-94, Clinton), Robert Perry (1995-97, Clinton), and Leon Panetta (2011-Present, Obama).  You don't see GOP Presidents appoint Democrats to areas such as Education and HHS, do you?

    •  I don't think party affiliation matters... (6+ / 0-)

Because party affiliation is very largely based on domestic politics/beliefs.  What is a Democratic FP vs a Republican FP?  There are war pig chicken hawks in both parties.

I think having a [R] after his name, while meaningless, will help the President sell his plans to the general public.  He might not ever win the hardcore Repub, but the centrists, moderates will see Hagel - a Republican - cutting the budget, beating back the calls for war with Iran, calling it as he sees it with Israel - and it would be all the more powerful than coming from a Democrat even if they said the exact same thing, word for word.

The NRA is the Gun Manufacturer Lobby. Nothing more. Their pontification about the second amendment is nothing more than their ad jingle. They're the domestic version of the Military Industrial Complex.

      •  I agree (7+ / 0-)

Hagel is part of Ground Zero to reduce nuclear weapons, he has said that Afghanistan has lost its mission, and he has said that defense budget could be reduced without losing capability.
These seem to me pretty reasonable positions.
So even if he has an R by his name, I could live with that.

And furthermore note that his own party got rid of him, and they are now trashing him.

Obama 2012...going to win it with our support!!!

          •  Which would be relevant... (0+ / 0-)

...if he were a nominee for Surgeon-General or Secretary of the Interior/head of the EPA.

Guess what he's not? EITHER OF THOSE.

Tea Party-style ideological purity will destroy us. As a party we need to engage in realpolitik, knowing our proposals have the support of vast majorities of Americans, and let the GOTP continue making asses out of themselves.

if you know anything about the pentagon, gay rights, choice, and the environment are all extremely relevant. sorry. it's not about purity, it's about not being rancid.

              •  Right. Because policy changes in those areas (0+ / 0-)

ONLY occur through the command structure of DoD.

SMH...clearly it is about ideological purity with you because you demand that the Secretary of Killing People under Color of Protecting Ourselves also be a champion of progressive ideals. DoD will never lead the pack in social reform--get used to it.
