  •  Sad to say, I'm pretty sure we are going to have (12+ / 0-)

some sort of major armed conflict within the US sometime in the next 20 years. The wingnuts are too far gone in their fantasy world of self-victimization, but not so far gone that they aren't going to notice that demographics are turning them into yesterday's news. As they get older and have less to lose, the temptation to take part in an armed revolution to save their vision of America is going to become too strong for them to resist. Count on it.

If there is no accountability for those who authorized torture, we can no longer say that we are a nation of laws, not men.

    •  I think Mike's right, (10+ / 0-)

exactly for the reasons he enumerates.  We've already see the effect of the RW bubble in the election, in Congress and online.  That tension will come to a head somehow and people are going to get hurt.  This is an example of why:  http://www.rightwingwatch.org/...

    •  The broad support required to turn (11+ / 0-)

that from a bunch of grumbling rednecks into an actual revolutionary political movement isn't there.

If something like this happens, it will involve wingnuts taking over one or two isolated small towns in deep red states, barricading off the roads in and out of town, then posing for pictures being Freedom Fighting Patriots with their guns. (The correct way to handle this situation will be to do nothing until they get hungry and bored and go home again, even if that takes a few weeks.)

There are not enough willing to fight and die for The Cause, especially in any particular part of the country, for their "revolution" to come to anything more.

      •  I jope you are right. (7+ / 0-)

but I disagree on such an uprising needing broad support. A couple of hundred thousand wingnuts and a megalomaniac billionaire or two could easily build a right-wing version of Al Qaeda.

        •  Yes, I can see more OKC-style terrorism (5+ / 0-)

Much more likely than some group actually contesting the U.S. Government for control of U.S. territory.

I'm actually sort of surprised that there hasn't been more of it already -- perhaps the guys who would have been blowing up buildings are staging mass murder-suicides instead.

I probably should have been a little more specific. I don't see any uprising being close to successful in its goals of actually overthrowing the US government, but I do think it could become a major national security/law-enforcement problem.

          •  I think the FBI is finding those home-grown terror (5+ / 0-)

cells and arresting the idjits before they become operational.  Sooner or later it will lead up the chain because there won't be enough care taken to hide all the evidence.  But one multi-millionaire being taken down won't change that there are many, many more who would love to do the same thing.

This is one area where I hope the FBI keeps winning.  I know there are stories of them spying on peace groups and I know there are stories of them perhaps putting the ideas into the heads of people to actually do things that they then get arrested for, but I'm hoping the FBI does succeed here.  If we could get rid of assault rifles and huge stockpiles of ammo and large clips, then we wouldn't need the FBI spying on people so hard and diligently, but it seems the NRA needs to scare its members and the FBI is the way to do it.  It's a vicious cycle - scare the people by telling them the FBI and government are coming in black helicopters to take away your freedom so buy weapons, become dangerous and then the FBI actually does need to come and neutralize the threat these heavily armed scared crazy people pose to citizens and you get scenes where someone opens fire on the police because they're coming to get their guns, like what happened in Pittsburg and perhaps Newtown.

      •  I can imagine several scenarios that change that. (1+ / 0-)

One is a massive Islamic terrorist attack that dwarfs 9/11. If a black muslim is one of the perpetrators and we have a far-right POTUS, hello concentration camps.

Another is a massive worldwide economic collapse that makes 08 look like the Good Ol Days. Duh.

Another is a Democratic president enforcing wholesale nationwide gun confiscation with the full-blown power of our budding Police State. Multiply the horror of Ruby Ridge by a few ten thousand and you get the idea.

"The correct way to handle this situation will be to do nothing until they get hungry and bored and go home again, even if that takes a few weeks."

Yeah see, how much you wanna bet they don't do this and act stupid by sending a bunch of militarized police in guns blazing. That is what happened w/ Ruby Ridge you know. The Gov't could have sent a plainclothes agent with the local sheriff to Randy Weaver's door. Instead, they opted for a military-style raid operation with helicopters and sharpshooters. Even though they knew for a fact that this was a heavily armed household w/ military experience that was paranoid about the gov't attacking them w/ helicopters and sharpshooters.

        Self-fulfilling prophecy.

        •  We could also have a meteor strike... (4+ / 0-)

but you gotta draw the line of "stuff that, while certainly possible, is not gonna keep me awake at night" somewhere.

First of all, this far-right POTUS is not gonna happen unless something else equally unlikely happens first. The current electoral situation will keep the Presidency in the hands of the Democrats for the next ten or fifteen years at least, and if a Republican defies that prediction it will be some lily-livered moderate like Mike Bloomberg who would not be on board with the concentration camp plan.

Worldwide economic collapse: this one is somewhat more likely, however I sort of think we've already collapsed so much I don't know how much further we can fall suddenly. There is so much wealth in the West that we could survive off pawning our metaphorical jewelry for decades; it's not going to get to the people-starving-in-the-streets stage for any simply economic reason.

Your third point requires a Democratic President with (metaphorical) big brass balls and a total  lack of concern about pissing off the far right. Meteor strike is -- perhaps sadly -- more likely.

On your fourth point: I hope you're wrong, but you may be right. I just hope that the feds remember the examples of Waco and Ruby Ridge and instead of intervening, wait for their tantrum to expend its force and for them to surrender after they get hungry enough. I may be giving the federal authorities entirely too much credit, though.

          •  "far-right POTUS is not gonna happen" phew (0+ / 0-)

yeah let's hope so. Because they could easily win in 2016 for all we know.

I'm not as optimistic as you. I think Free Republic is eventually gonna wind up getting that honest-to-god Fascist President they (sorta) secretly all want so bad, deep in their evil hearts.

that is why they are getting more extreme and polarized.
Mostly, they will be diluted by demographic change and their influence will be marginalized in government by less extreme elements.   Those crazy enough to revolt will be either killed or imprisoned.

    •  lol you know we would lose such a conflict right (0+ / 0-)

Which side has all the guns again?

Which side has more police officers?

Which side has more military personnel?

Yeah. Good luck with that, progressives.

They assumed the cops were poised to beat the teachers to a pulp.

They also "know" the cities are nothing but welfare mothers, homosexuals, illegals, and Jews.
