  •  Armistead Maupin has already written (4+ / 0-)

a novel based on a far more devious and higher profile hoax:  The Night Listener.  It then became a film starring Robin Williams and Toni Colette.

In the early '90s, a boy by the name of Tony Godby Johnson surfaced and alegedly wrote his own account of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of his parents.  He then tells how he was diagnosed with AIDS, and his public life became a roller coaster of health crises followed by being dragged back from death's door.

However, no one other than Tony's adoptive mother ever claimed to have seen the boy.  There was no record in Social Services of any child who had experienced what Tony claimed to have experienced.  But skeptics were accused of denial of child abuse, attacking people with AIDS, and trying to erase the history of the catastrophe.  It got very ugly.

If there were such a person, he would be an adult by now, but, still, nobody has met this person.  The most plausible explanation is that he was a hoax.
