If they let him "finish the job" we would have been stuck in a quagmire 12 years earlier than we eventually did.

and Saddam would've been out on his keister, if not dead. Might've saved us the whole second war of the Persian Gulf. We'll never know....

      •  And it would have paid for itself too, huh? (3+ / 0-)

        G.H.W. Bush

Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the U.N.'s mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land.

        Mission accomplished. Ooops.

of the war was up north. Three days to take Kuwait doesn't equal two days to take Baghdad. I get your point though. Knowing what we know now, it might have been no worse to fight the war then. But Bush Sr. never envisioned what his idiot son would do in the thrall of Cheney the Dick.

        •  Yes he did envision an invasion of Iraq. (2+ / 0-)

And, unlike his idiot son, he knew it would be a clusterfuck:

          •  Good quote! Though I said he never (0+ / 0-)

envisioned what his son would do. George Sr. knew the Middle East well, having been head of the CIA and close to the Saudi royal family. He did the right thing for the right reasons. Idiot Jr. destroyed his legacy.

      •  And, if you'll remember. (6+ / 0-)

Taking Baghdad is the easy part.

It's the occupation that kills you.

to liberate Kuwait - but in retrospect - we had Saddam on the ropes - there was an internal resistance - with little effort, Saddam could have been removed and it probably would have went a lot better.  Remember, we turned our back on the Iraqi resistance.

      •  He let Saddam use helicopters in the no-fly zone (0+ / 0-)

and thus the Iraqi helicopter gunships mowed down the "revolution" that we were wanting from the cease fire.

Ooopsie! That dumbass ommission costs many, many lives and an awful lot of Iraqi good will.
