when facing surgery. There comes a point, as you're in pre-op, where you have to surrender, to the surgeons, to their team, to the anesthesia, to whatever happens. Am I using "religion" in those moments of fear  that I conveniently fail to maintain later? Yes, but that is one of its functions. Some people don't need it. As for "proofs," I've had those moments come upon me in seemingly ordinary situations. They are unfortunately rare. They are usually situations that feel much more than coincidences, as if I have been placed at some intersection in order to do something that may not even be so significant beyond maybe helping someone do something. One day I witnessed a scary but minor traffic accident that really shook up an elderly lady  driving  home from Mass. I was surprisingly calm, & I got her settled  & away from the other driver until the police arrived. I saw the accident because I had decided  to walk in one direction rather than another after using a bank ATM.  I came away convinced that I hadn't made that decision at all.
