  •  China Doesn't Need to Recover Its Wealth and Power (6+ / 0-)

from its dirty masses. The United States still has a huge amount of wealth and power to recover from we who hold it unjustly.

What do you mean by "China" here?

If you mean the government, then by virtue of being a dictatorship, it holds everything unjustly.

The sheer brickheadedness of many statements made by Americans about China boggles the mind. For roughly the first half of my life, these consisted mostly of uninformed pessimism. For the second half, it's been uninformed optimism.

Earth to USA: this is not some sort of footrace, and it says little about the state of the respective societies involved. China has been one of the most technologically advanced parts of the world for, oh, four thousand years or so. It's not surprising that it's regaining that status. It would be far further ahead in that process without the incompetent and deadly detours that the Chinese Communist Party took it on over approximately 1950-1980. But we're going to have quite a time uncovering the precise amount of progress made, because as a dictatorship with no formal commitment to freedom of the press, the Chinese government can put out whatever figures it likes, or fantasizes, and not worry too much about being called on them.

(And remember, misleading data doesn't even have to be deliberate lying. It can also be wishful thinking, and/or fear of reporting a less rosy picture than superiors have been led to expect.)

      •  I'm not a defender of Mao. But he did solve (0+ / 0-)

        China's food problem.

Just as Soviet Russia solved it's food problem.

And yes, i know about the famines during both rules.

Mao went crazy.  Stalin was crazy all along.

However, the Soviets took Russia from a backwards feudal system to Sputnik.

Command economies can get a lot done, at least in the short term.

      •  Don't forget European domination of China in the (0+ / 0-)

1800's. The West was quite aware of China's history of  success and domination (think Mongols) so around 1700 it set about breaking its economic power and degrading its people so to plunder the country for profits.
Exactly like corporations are doing to America today. History repeats and repeats and repeats, just with different names for the  actors.
