that has..dammit, IIRC, heh, 600 meter range..it was used to power a hovering RC controlled antenna and to charge an rc drone.

An army unit can send up a drone and keep local area watch from altitude for over 12 hours with this...can't go far but it can sure see far. The RC just has to receive the laser and doesn't then need a larger heavier battery to stay up that long.

Without the laser power transfer a  larger battery is needed to allow them to range pretty far, but that would be a different drone..but that's the military.

Hobbyists are putting thin film solar on the wings of their flying Radio Controlled planes and adding aloft time to their battery powered RC's. Over an hour and a half last I looked, up from sorta normal 45 min.
The current RC range champion is something over 100km, and returns to the exact spot it was launched from even if the radio link goes down!, and with a record height over 4000meters,  programmable, gps waypoints, photos, and live streaming, for something less than $2000. And they get attacked by boo birds too, a Golden Eagle was videoed, a crow, a seagull...fun for everyone.

Thanks HD, good luck to MIT, I hope they discover and develop even more, maybe this announcement helped bring in more funding, more and better students, post grads, teachers, and caused someone else somewhere to take another look at something they were thinking about back in the lab.

    This machine kills Fascists.
