The article from Kurzweil is largely a cut and past job from the press release.  In other words, it's not an objective evaluation of the claims of a breakthrough or of the commercial potential.  One of the big problems with scientific journalism - like all journalism - is that the journalistic standards of independent sources and thorough vetting of the claims are too often lacking or left up to the original source, in this case the publishing scientist or university communication office.

Having a paper published in a scientific journal does not a breakthrough make.  Believe me I've published plenty, have reviewed plenty of papers and read many, many more.  True breakthroughs are very few and very far between and the hit rate for successful commercial application is even more so.  So forgive me when I'm skeptical of claims of a breakthrough and commercial promise.

I think it's great to have diaries on science, especially if they get visibility by being on the rec list.  But they should be treated with the same skepticism and hard nosed evaluation as those that are about politics.  The problem is most everybody has an opinion - is an "expert" - on politics, very few are in that position with respect to a given field of science.
