    funded, even when it is done at universities. In fact corporate biotech money "given" to universities frequently claims potential patent rights for the private "donor". It is almost a form of "outsourcing".

    Since the time of Reagan, the US has shifted the burden of research funding from the public sector to the private sector, which is why we have had the growth of "translational" research and the starvation of basic research. This has also resulted in inadequate numbers of people with basic research skills needed even for translational research.
