that would make Texas a full-fledged Socialist society.

We've been indoctrinated for a century that socialism means taking your money away from you and giving it to some lazy, shiftless person (usually somebody of a different color, different ethnicity, different accent, etc).

Simply, (democratic) socialism is a society in which the people control the means of production and distribution of goods and services.  That's it in a nutshell.

The Green Bay Packers, a fan-owned football team, is often used as an example of a perfect socialist enterprise.  The same is true of ANY company whose employees have bought out the boss and hold equal shares and have equal votes in the company's business.

When the owner of a failing cab company in Madison, Wisconsin wanted to simply close his company and walk away, all of the drivers, dispatchers, and other employees got together and were able to raise enough money among themselves to buy the company.  Now, every employee is an equal owner, and when they work, they are working for themselves, so they are motivated to put out that "extra effort" that few put out when working for somebody else.  That company soon became by far the most successful and popular taxi company in Madison.

Just like if the Texans "bought" Texas.  In fact, given Texas's dubious contributions to the Union, I would send them a volunteer contribution to help them do it [grin].

"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living in society, they create for themselves, in the course of time, a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it." --Frederic Bastiat, French writer and economist, 1850
