  •  I dont think there will be a 30-60-90 day deal (2+ / 0-)

Senate Dems apparently reject that, and Jake Sherman of Politico points out he talked to many lawmakers/aides and they noted extending rates for less than year is impossible/silly.

So my feeling is, when ever a deal is done, it will be a bigger deal. And it seems like it will mostly likely be done in early Jan.

    •  Deal will be harder in January... (2+ / 0-)

As Dems get 55 Senators and 7-8 more House Reps, meaning Boehner and his need to get 218 votes from his caucus alone before he brings anything to the floor will even be harder.  Now he could lose 23 members, come new Congress he can only lose 15.  Also there is a lot of lame duck members who were defeated or retired out that are free to vote for anything now, whereas the next congress will be worried about their re-election in 2014 and many freshmen wouldn't want their first vote to be for the grand bargain deal - especially in deep red districts, thanks to gerrymndering they have to worry more about primaries than general challenges.

The NRA is the Gun Manufacturer Lobby. Nothing more. Their pontification about the second amendment is nothing more than their ad jingle. They're the domestic version of the Military Industrial Complex.

      •  But he will be re-elected speaker on the 3rd (6+ / 0-)

He has thrown out the "majority of the majority" rule before, and he would have to do that next year, considering he would have a smaller majority than he did in the last congress.

Also, everything they would be voting on would be a tax cut, not a tax hike, so that could smooth the way to getting enough GOP support.

          He might not get re-elected.

I don't know whom would be chosen to replace him, but I wonder if the speakership could be contested.

      •  I guess what I'm saying, and people (0+ / 0-)

might not like this, is we probably end up with a Jan bill closer to the Obama-Boehner framework. So chained CPI, but perhaps better terms for Dems on tax rate increase and debt ceiling hike(reflecting the leverage of their Dems in the new congress), plus dealing with the other stuff(Amt, unemployment benefits, etc).

I'm not saying I agree with that, but I think that's likely given that a 30-60-90 day deal seems impossible and pointless, while a year long deal might be out of reach.

So basically a big deal or nothing.
