I'm a Massachusetts voter and I don't have a favorite to replace John Kerry.  I don't intend to donate to anyone at this point; I want to see who gets into the race, and see how the race goes, before I make up my mind.

Why should I support Markey over his opponents in the Democratic primary?

For one, Markey is and has been a consistent progressive in the House.

He is VERY pro-clean energy and doing something about the environment. He's the ranking Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee, and was one of the key members of the House that pressured BP to place underwater cameras on the Deepwater Horizon mess in the Gulf in 2010 - exposing to the world the mess that BP was causing there. He's the former chair of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. And he's been one of the leading critics of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's approval of Westinghouse's new nuclear reactor design after the Fukushima disaster. Lastly, on Green issues, he was the co-author, with California's Henry Waxman, of the American Clean Energy and Security Act.

Full disclosure - he is also the former Chair of the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet (a committee on which he served 20 years). Not all of his positions there were always my favorites, but here are two good quotes from his own bio page:

He is the author of H.R. 3458, the Internet Freedom Preservation Act, a bill that would ensure that as the Internet continues to evolve, it remains a level playing field guided by the principles of openness and competition.

Rep. Markey is a champion for Net Neutrality and nondiscrimination on the Internet and for new sources of effective competition to cable TV franchises, local telephone operators, and satellite and other wireless services.

      How's that for a start?
