  •  Two big problems with this: (7+ / 0-)

    1) You just can't make a viable economic argument for new nuclear power plants. They always come in far, far over-budget and far, far overdue before going on-line. They are now so obscenely expensive that no conceivable consortium of private/commercial funding can be cobbled together to under-write the cost. And I think it's grotesque to put taxpayers on the hook for the funding of new nukes that will (as always) deliver essentially all their profits to the wealthy and well-connected. They are not economically competitive with renewable sources.

    2) The nuclear industry just cannot be trusted. From the beginning they have been absurdly overconfident, dishonest, deceitful, and dangerous. Whenever safety contended with profit, the former lost and the latter won. There have been scores of 'near-miss' events due to the industry's chronic profiteering. At Three Mile Island we were extremely fortunate the outcome wasn't a whole lot worse. At Fukushima the industry rolled snake-eyes, and from published accounts what is most surprising is not how bad it is, but why it hadn't happened before, given the relentless negligence of the entire nuclear industry regarding safety. Just one example: the reactor design at Fukushima was recognized years ago to have inadequate capacity to vent hydrogen gas in the event of an accident. The industry delayed action on this; when a 'fix' was finally instituted, it was the cheapest and simplest possible choice. And the 'fix' failed catastrophically at all 3 Fukushima reactor that melted down; all suffered severe hydrogen explosions causing severe structural damage.

    •  Nuclear is over cost for the same reason wind (0+ / 0-)

is over cost. People fight the building of new wind farms and the delays drive up the cost. It has NOTHING to do with the inherent technology.

      •  Absurd nuclear costs are not just "NIMBYism". (2+ / 0-)

They are the inevitable consequence of a technology that is enormously hazardous, that requires constant extremely complex and technical management by highly trained workers, and that produces thousands of tons of extremely toxic waste that must be managed for literally hundreds if not thousands of years. A technology where a single accident can render a city uninhabitable for decades. The resulting potential liability is virtually limitless.

        Wind power? Not so much.
