I actually have two (one came from the NRA when my uncle bought it through the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 1962 and it cost about $30).  The government also sold surplus M1 Garands and M1 Carbines at the same time, through the NRA.  Back then, having civilian shooters trained before entering military service was considered to be essential to the defense of the country.  NRA gun clubs were provided surplus ammunition FREE, and in practically unlimited quantities.  I fired my first "high-powered rifle", an M1 Garand, when I was about 10 years old at one of these NRA gun ranges.  I shot several bulls-eyes at the 100 yard target, too, and my shoulder was bruised and sore for a few days.

Seems strange now, but that is the way it was in the olden days.
