  •  no, they can leave the boxes (13+ / 0-)

(If you are faint of heart, don't read on. Keep in mind that rats and mice carry and spread many diseases, they breed like crazy, and they cause many lethal house fires by chewing on electrical wires. Peaceful co-existence is not an option.)

The boxes are so that only rats can get at the poison, not dogs and kids. Secondary poisoning (eating of dead rodents by other animals) is a hazard with some rodenticides, and not at with others. When I was faced with a severe problem.. I trapped inside, and used bait boxes outside. Don't use baits inside, because if an animal dies in the wall.. well, you can imagine the smell.

With a problem like you describe, you need a professional. I'm telling you these things so that you have more information when you talk to different companies or agencies.

You should try to get your neighbors together to work on this. Contact the Health Dept. or any other gov't agency and if they don't do rat abatement, ask who does.

It's going to take a while, and if there's a refuge you can't access, like some crazy person who harbors rats (yes it happens) it may just be a matter of "control" rather than an end to the problem.

Feel free to send me a message. Good luck.
