    but I have seen estimates of 300 million firearms, held by somewhere between 75 and 90 million individuals, about half of whom -  35-45 million people - own handguns.

    Any attempt to harden those numbers and get a better handle on firearms ownership through, for example, registration, would be a formidable task.  Not impossible, but difficult.

    The interesting part of the surveys that I have seen is that while there are more weapons, but concentrated in fewer hands each year, and that the only demographic category where ownership is up is older white males.  Other categories - younger people, women, blacks, Latinos, Asians - are all on the decline and have been for years.
