    Somewhere upthread someone posted that only about 23% of people actually own guns.  That means that a "no guns allowed on these premises" sign would be more likely to encourage 3 people for every one it discourages.  You don't have to go as far as saying "anyone with a gun will not be served."  A business is private property.  You have the right to decide what will be allowed on your property ("No shirt, no shoes, no service").  

    By the same token, "gun carriers welcome" would encourage no more than 1 in 4 -- and might even discourage some gun owners who have no interest in sitting down to eat or browsing the aisles knowing someone else might have a gun -- especially if carried with the skill and attention to safety as the diarist's example.

    Prohibiting guns in most establishments would seem to be a win/win unless you are absolutely sure that the majority of your clientele are gun owners -- and you are okay with them packing in your place of business.
