I like very much OR-01, OR-04 and OR-05. It is a very good basis to work.

    I would sugest some change:

    - It would be good if OR-01 and the OR-05 have around a 56% Obama 2012 result. For it I think it would be positive if the 1st get out of Multnomah County, taking in change a little part of Marion County. The 5th would have in change a little more of Multnomah, and taking some of the most democratic precincts, the PVI of OR-05 would improve significantly without damage for OR-03.

    - It would be good to include Curry County in the 4th, including less of Douglas County, but keeping the 56% Obama 2012 for the entire district. I always like the idea of keeping all the coast in blue districts.

    •  I think I tried doing that in the 4th (1+ / 0-)

because it's a bit better than the Douglas portion and its also got only a tenuous claim to a transportation connection to that 2nd district, but there's not enough population in the parts of Douglas County to trade them.

Certainly until you tell me that I was not realizing that the biggest part of the population o Douglas county was in your OR-02.

But I do a bid... and this would be what I was looking for:

        Photobucket

I painted in blue the Curry County, to see the population.

I painted in green the part of the Douglas county that I would let in your OR-04. The road from Reedsport to the South seems to be inside this part.

And in the third color it its the part that I would move to your OR-02.

        Would you like it?

        •  actually yes that'd be fine (1+ / 0-)

I think that's the part of Douglas I have in the 4th in the other map. And it's fine for the 4th.  Obama won Reedsport in 2008, lost it in 2012, but our state house candidate won it.  And this would slightly improve the Democratic numbers in the 4th, and make the map more justifiable a bit.

          •  Perfect (0+ / 0-)

With these two little changes in your first map, OR-01, OR-04 and OR-05 would be perfect for me, and I would respect the three even in my Gerrymandered maps finding the limits. )

The alone necessary step to do the perfect map finding the limits would be to mix OR-03 and OR-02 in two Multhnomah based districts, one going to the east and the other going to the south.

        •  now I see, when I look at your map the populations (1+ / 0-)

look the same in the extra Douglas portion and Curry.  When I look at my map in DRA and try to draw it like yours, I get a roughly 600 person deviation (2nd too big by about 600, 4th too small).  Now, in real life you could find 600 people to move between the districts in Douglas County, probably just south and southeast of Reedsport.  In DRA you can't.  So perhaps ideally it would be best to draw it that way, but I was trying to keep deviations down.  The deviations in my version in the diary are just 2 and 27.  Not bad, since we try to keep them in single digits when the maps are drawn here.

I try to follow your map but it is difficult to see the smaller details.

I glad if this can have a solution, and the map would improve a little more still taking a little more territory in the south east of Reedsport for OR-04. It would be more homogeneous still in the forms.

        •  and the 4th would go from (1+ / 0-)

56.04% Obama in my version to 56.24% in yours.

          •  I was expecting a change like this (0+ / 0-)

Going to the very small details, I like a little more the percentage of your version, but, both are in the right level for me. The perfect percentage for me would be 55.6 or 55.7%.
